Gentlemen, Start Your Ducks!
September 24, 2008 by Pam Salls
It’s time for the 17th Annual Georgia River Cleanup, the largest single volunteer effort to beautify Georgia’s water resources. Sponsored by Keep Roswell Beautiful (KRB), over 250 volunteers from the North Fulton area, collect over 2,000 pounds of trash from the banks and surrounding areas of the Chattahoochee River. This year’s event is Saturday, September 27th with the clean-up scheduled to begin from 9:00 am until noon at Riverside Park. Registration starts at 8:30. KRB will also hold its annual Great Roswell Duck Race, beginning at 12:45. The duck race starts at the Big Creek footbridge on Oxbo Road, where 500 ducks will race for cash prizes. Ducks can be rented up until race time from any KRB board member, from the City Public Works office on Hill Street or on race day at Riverside Park. Ducks are $3.00 for one and $5.00 for three. First place prize is $100 and $50 for second place.
Both events take place, rain or shine. Other activities include an interactive educational expo with arts and crafts activities for children that focus on clean water issues.
The state of Georgia has more than 70,000 miles of rivers and streams that need help staying clean. As a part of the effort, not only individuals, but scout troops, churches, neighborhoods, churches and other service organizations are asked to pull together and assist in making a difference for our Chattahoochee River.
The North Fulton clean up is co-sponsored by Keep Roswell Beautiful, the city of Roswell, Keep North Fulton Beautiful, the city of Alpharetta and the Chattahoochee Nature Center.
